Austin music minute reviews ‘polite society’

One of those bands to keep on your radar is ATX hardcore outfit Bondbreakr, a (relatively) new band that rattled ribcages at this year’s SXSW, and has played shows with the likes of H.R. (Bad Brains), Gregg Turner (former Angry Samoans), Atlanta’s Dead Register, and ATX bands Hellfury, F**k Money and Pleasure Venom. They’ve described their sound as grime, noise and metal crashing headlong into one another at a crossroads, resulting in a psych-rage punk rock carnage.

Today’s AMM featured track is the blistering “Polite Society,” confronting racial and social injustice at the height of the pandemic, though the band notes the lyrics feel as relevant as ever.

music review: bride of crankenstein, melvins cover

Review of the album A Future of Bad Men: A Melvins Tribute (Various artists, Black Donut Records, 2022).

“It’s only really Bondbreakr (featuring ex-Butthole Surfers man Jeff Pinkus) who’ve taken an opportunity to dig a little deeper and choose something from the vast array of post-90s recordings.

Their rendition of ‘Bride of Crankenstein’ (originally from Melvins’ 2014 LP ‘Hold It In’) flaunts a heavy, distorted riff set against a growled and occasionally brattish vocal […].

The marriage of relentlessly heavy guitars, groove laden bass and banjo captures the arty nature of the track perfectly, and in under three minutes Bondbreakr not only signal their love for a great band but advertise themselves as a musical act to watch out for in their own right.”

Afropunk: Exclusive video premiere of ‘polite society’

With an unwavering intensity, the latest from Austin’s BÖNDBREAKR finds the hardcore quartet more than living up to their name. “POLITE SOCIETY” is a taut no-filler fireball thrown in the direction of a culture which prefers silence to justice.

The Best Music We Saw at SXSW on Saturday

The group’s majestically long-flowing hair suggested something thrash adjacent, but close attention to the relentless riffage evinced only trace heavy metal lineage.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to Böndbreakr – a delightful Eighties throwback, but one whose precise point of inspiration took some time for me to place.

The group’s majestically long-flowing hair suggested something thrash adjacent, but close attention to the relentless riffage evinced only trace heavy metal lineage.

When I asked the drummer if D-beat pioneers Discharge might be an influence, he confirmed: “Yes, English Eighties anarcho-punk is all I listen to. Wow, you’re the first one to notice that. People compare us to Bad Brains for some reason.” Reader, never have I been more proud to be a pathetic, smelly hardcore nerd.

Live music review: Female fronted bands put “Power” in Empowerment Fest

Despite the warm afternoon, the band maintained high energy and their sound was relentless: hard driving rhythms overlaid by Hayes’ monster vocals kept us transfixed.

After Adrian Conner wrapped up, we hopped over to the second stage where BÖNDBREAKR unleashed a powerful set of hardcore metal-punk fusion led by dynamic front woman Gerilyn Hayes a/k/a Hurricane G.

EP Review: bondbreakr - bondbreakr

From Austin Texas and full of hell for the the systems we all find blocking our way and creating a life of untold problems. Fighting the system is not a new thing in the world of music, but to be still jumping in with a sledgehammer and taking on the issues that are created by inherently corrupt and self motivated authorities.

Hitting you like a jackhammer with ‘Into The Night’, you’re left in no doubt that this is going to be an onslaught of the heaviest order. This review is not going to dissect, anatomise or dismember the lyrical content, simply because it does exactly what it says on the tin, lets just mention Rage Against The Machine and if you don’t know who they are or have never listened to them, I suggest you do!

‘Cop Rock’ is second in the playing order, possibly the most melodic of the collection, although the thrash is never too far away.  ‘Angry Tooth’ drops in nicely as a well crafted slice of noisy grit filled punk with a hint of groove underpinning the core of it, then ‘Shaman’ arrives and leaves with haste.

Now we get to the meat on the bone in the form of ‘Kill Your Gods’ giving what might possibly a glimpse into the future of the band, the song feels much more structured than most and slaps a big target on BONDBREAKR that music fans will see and take aim at.
